Late Friday, Lubbock ISD posted the campus coordinator/head football coach position at Lubbock Monterey, signaling the end of Judd Thrash's tenure after three seasons.

Thrash oversaw a complete rebuild of the program. After taking over a team that had hit rock bottom in his first season at the helm with an 0–10 mark in 2022, Monterey improved to 4–6 in 2023 and posted a 7–5 record in 2024, winning the District 2-5A Division I title. The Plainsmen earned a first-round playoff win and gave eventual regional champion Denton Ryan a strong challenge in the area round before falling 29–16.

Coach Thrash was placed on administrative leave by Lubbock ISD following an arrest and vehicle crash in early April. Offensive coordinator Jason Sims has led the program during spring workouts in Thrash’s absence.

Sims is expected to be a strong candidate for the permanent role. He was hired as Monterey’s offensive coordinator last offseason and brings a proven track record as a head coach, compiling a 100–47 record with previous stops at Quanah (2010–2014) and Childress (2015–2021).
