Longtime Houston Memorial head coach Gary Koch announced his retirement on Tuesday.

Koch will finish out the season leading the Mustangs program as they look to secure a playoff spot in District 17-6A.

Koch is an institution in Spring Branch ISD having spent an incredible 47 years at Memorial High School, including the last 31 seasons as a head coach where he currently holds a 194-151-3 record. Memorial is off to a difficult 0-4 start to 2024.

He is the longest tenured head coach in the Houston area and has led Memorial to the postseason 19 times. The high-water mark was a run to the 2010 state semifinals where the Mustangs fell to Cibolo Steele, 44-20. Memorial also made four other trips to the regional semifinals during Koch’s tenure.

Expect Spring Branch ISD to begin a search for Koch’s replacement immediately following the season.
