The Blitz: Transfer portal update, including former Gunter standout transferring to ACU

Southland Conference

  • Houston Christian continued to reshape its roster before the 2023 season, receiving five commitments from players in the transfer portal. Three of the pledges are along the offensive lineman, including AJ Crease (UTPB), Nonso Omezi (Texas A&M-Commerce), Jaden Edmonson (Texas A&M-Commerce), KC Comyford (Shasta College), while linebacker Josh Ferguson (New Mexico State) fills a need for the Huskies.

  • One former member of the HCU offensive line, Edouard Paradis, was selected in the fifth round with the 45th overall pick by the Toronto Argonauts during the Canadian Football League draft.

  • The Peter Rossomando era at Lamar is already making waves with the 2024 recruiting class and added a commitment from 3-star athlete Jameer Muhammad from Carter-Riverside. Muhammad gained over 1,800 all-purpose yards and scored 22 touchdowns last year.

  • The Cardinals also received a commitment from tight end JaCorey Hyder, who appeared in six games for UTSA last season. Hyder was a 3-star prospect out of Woodville High School and enters Lamar’s roster with three years of eligibility.

  • Texas A&M-Commerce received a commitment from transfer offensive lineman Kyle Lofye. The former Frisco Lone Star standout is returning to Texas after spending last year with Stetson University. 

  • The UIW Cardinals added a commitment from kicker Mason Lawler. The Bowling Green transfer fills an immediate need for the Cardinals. Lawler played in 13 games for BGSU last season, made 11 of his 16 field goal attempts, and hit a career-long 49-yard field goal against New Mexico State in the Quick Lane Bowl.

  • The Cardinals also gained a commitment from defensive lineman Devin Grant, who is transferring from Colorado, and quarterback Richard Torres, who spent last year at Nebraska.

Southwestern Athletic Conference

  • Prairie View A&M has signed dual-threat quarterback Jaden Johnson from Coahoma Community College. Johnson threw for 944 yards and eight touchdowns while adding 216 yards and three touchdowns on the ground in six games for the Tigers last year. He is expected to compete for the backup position behind Trazon Connley.

  • Texas Southern added a high-profile commitment from 2024 3-star offensive lineman Frank Moss Jr. The Houston Heights standout is a huge addition to the Tigers 2024 recruiting class. The Tigers also added a commitment from offensive lineman Gabe Martin, who is transferring to TSU from the College of San Mateo.

United Athletic Conference

  • Three Tarleton Texans were invited to attend NFL rookie camps as undrafted free agents. Offensive lineman Blake Haynes participated in the Kansas City Chiefs three-day rookie camp last weekend. At the same time, defensive back Donovan Banks participated in the New York Giants rookie minicamp last weekend, and defensive lineman Blaine Hoover will attend the San Francisco 49ers rookie minicamp this weekend.

  • Abilene Christian received a commitment from former Gunter standout Hut Graham, who is transferring from Texas Tech following a redshirt freshman season. Graham was a member of the Red Raiders scout team as a defensive back but could compete for a spot at quarterback or defensive back for ACU.

Lone Star Conference

American Southwest Conference

  • Hardin-Simmons has promoted Cade Bell to a full-time position on the Cowboys coaching staff. Bell is a former player for HSU and was elevated from graduate assistant to running backs coach for the 2023 season. In addition, Logan Floyd was moved from running backs coach to defensive backs coach.

Sooner Athletic Conference

  • The Marcos Hinojos era at Wayland Baptist will begin with a home game against North American University on Sept. 2. The Pioneers 2023 schedule includes road games against Ottawa (Ariz.) and Texas Wesleyan, who are the SAC favorites heading into the season. WBU will host their first and last two games of the season, with road games scheduled in five of their other six contests.
