Brownfield ISD once again has a new athletic director/head football coach as Lubbock Coronado co-defensive coordinator Taheric Brantley was named the new head of the Cubs' athletic program and football team.

Earlier last week Brownfield ISD announced that Jeff Lofton, who was hired just two weeks ago, was not going to take the position at Brownfield and would instead remain in Canyon ISD.

Brantley, who is a native of Lubbock and a graduate of Lubbock High, ran track collegiately at Texas Tech before beginning his coaching career at Brownfield where he spent three seasons, the final two as the Cubs defensive coordinator.

In 2021, Brantley joined DJ Mann’s staff at Lubbock Coronado as the Mustangs co-defensive coordinator. Ironically, former Brownfield head coach Aarrhon Flores was recently hired to be part of Mann’s staff as the new offensive coordinator.

“I really learned a lot from Coach Mann and being on a great staff, the biggest thing I’m taking away is being organized, how to use time effectively, managing all sports, things like that," Brantley said. "Coach Mann did a great job on that aspect of running a program."

Brantley is the second Lubbock Coronado assistant coach to land a head coaching job this offseason as former Mustangs offensive coordinator Zach Birdwell was named AD/HFC at Class 2A Tioga in March.

Brantley, who is just 31-years old, has extensive ties to Brownfield aside from the three years he spent on staff there and that was one draw for him.

“I’m really familiar with the area," he said. "I coached there and my wife is from Brownfield. It’s a great fit for my family. I know a lot of the kids because I coached them and I’ve built relationships there. The community is invested; we’ve got great facilities and the community and admintsration want to win. I’m just blessed to have this opportunity.”
