Steve Pierce, who has led the program at Dallas Samuell since 1997, will not return for a 27th season leading the Spartans, he announced Monday.

He is Dallas ISD’s longest tenured head coach.

Pierce has been an institution in Pleasant Grove since his time at Skyline High School where he graduated 1973 and was a three-sport star. He played college football at Tulsa.

Pierce, who spent 36 seasons as a head coach, led Samuell to the playoff 15 times and guided the Spartans to five district championships. Samuell advanced to the area round of the playoffs six times under his watch.

In 2001, Samuell advanced to the regional finals as it earned playoff wins over Dallas Jefferson and Sherman before falling to Highland Park. In 1999, Pierce led Samuell to one of the biggest playoff upsets in recent memory with a 17-14 win over Highland Park in bi-district.

He retires with a career record of 134-151.

Samuell’s football program has struggled in recent years with just seven wins over the past four seasons. Dallas ISD expects to try and move quickly on this job opening as the job is posted internally and should make it on to the THSCA website early this week.
