Chris Koetting announced his retirement on Tuesday afternoon after an incredible 13-year run as Canadian’s head coach. The news was first reported by PressPass Sports.

In a press release, Koetting cited the desire to spend more time with family after battling cognitive health issues the past year.

Koetting posted an amazing 163-25 record in his 13 seasons, winning three state titles in two different classifications. The Wildcats went back-to-back in 2A-Division I in 2014 and 2015, and won the state championship in 3A-Division II in 2020. The 2015 Wildcats team is considered one of the best pound for pound teams in the history of Texas High School Football.

Koetting’s team posted an amazing 49-10 record in the playoffs. In addition to the three state titles, Canadian was a state finalist in 2018 and made five other state semifinal appearances in his tenure in 2010, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2022.

During Koetting’s run, Canadian and Gunter developed one of the state’s best playoff rivalries, meeting in the Class 3A-Division II state semifinals in six of the past seven seasons with Gunter winning four of the six meetings.

Koetting spent 31 years as a coach with stops as an assistant at Perryton, Hereford and Lockhart before being named Canadian offensive coordiator in 2003 and in 2009 was named the Wildcats head coach.

Although there’s no word from Canadian ISD on Koetting’s replacement, the smart money is a hire withing Koetting’s staff, widely considered one of the top coaching staff’s in the Texas Panhandle.
