New Caney ISD on Thursday afternoon named McKinney Boyd LB Coach/Special Teams Coordinator Mike DeWitt as the next head football coach at New Caney High School, replacing Travis Reeve who, departed in March to take over at El Campo.

Coach DeWitt is best known for his 13 year stint at Coppell, five of which was as the Cowboys defensive coordinator under Joe McBride and from 2014-2021 he served as the Cowboys head coach. DeWitt posted a 53-36 record in eight years leading Coppell with his best season being an 11-2 mark in 2017, in 2016 Coppell posted a 10-3 record.

“During the process I learned a lot about the tradition and culture that’s been built at New Caney and it is unbelievable," he said. "It’s a family atmosphere, a first-class school district and we are excited to put down roots in New Caney."

Prior to his time at Coppell, Coach DeWitt spent time as an assistant at Frisco Liberty, Lewisville Hebron and Tom Bean, DeWitt was an assistant coach on Hebron’s 2005 state title team.

After spending 2022 on staff at McKinney Boyd with head coach Daniel Foster, who DeWitt coached at Hebron, DeWitt is back as a head coach. “I really enjoyed last year getting to take a step back and have a new perspective on things and I’m ready to get down to New Caney and hit the ground running,” said Coach DeWitt.

DeWitt said New Caney ISD is on spring break next week, so his first day at New Caney will be on April 17.
