Houston ISD has named Katy Paetow offensive line coach Louie Rodriguez as the next head football coach at Houston Chavez High School.

Rodriguez will be the Lobos third head coach in the past three seasons as he replaces Rafael Hernandez, who stepped down shortly after the end of the season after just one year.

“I’ve always wanted to be a head coach in the Houston area," he saiid. "It was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up, really a no brainer. It’s been a goal and dream of mine to be a head coach and to do it in Houston is just icing on the cake.

The Katy native has head coaching experience in Texas as he spent 2020 and 2021 as the head coach at Bishop High School, just south of Corpus Christi. In two years leading the Badgers he posted a 7-7 mark and led Bishop to the playoffs both seasons.

He began his coaching career as an assistant at Houston Sharpstown before moving to the college ranks as an assistant coach at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa.

Rodriguez then went to Boise State where he served as a graduate assistant at Boise State for three years. Rodriguez then joined the staff at Division II Pembrooke College in North Carolina before making his best known stop at national powerhouse Las Vegas Bishop Gorman. Rodriguez spent five seasons in Las Vegas, three as the offensive coordinator.

After leaving Bishop, Coach Rodriguez returned to his hometown where served for one season as the offensive line coach at Katy Paetow.

"I can’t thank Mr. Walker (Houston ISD Athletic Director), HISD administration and the administration at Chavez enough for this chance,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez, who is hoping to get started around mid-April, says Chavez fans can expect a lot of energy from his team.

“I want to bring excitement to the table at Chavez," he said. "We will be an up-tempo offense and we’ll play fast on defense. I want lots of energy, but will make sure we coach the kids up on fundamentals and technique as well.”
