Tioga ISD named Lubbock Coronado offensive coordinator Zach Birdwell as the next athletic director/head football coach at Tioga High School on Monday.

He replaces Chad Rogers, who stepped down in February to take the same role at Class 4A Sanger.

Birdwell, who is just 32-years old, is a native of Sweetwater and a graduate of Mary Hardin-Baylor. He has been a well-thought of young offensive mind since breaking into the coaching ranks where he’s guided explosive offensive attacks at the small school level.

He started his coaching career in East Texas where he was the offensive coordinator at Groveton for four seasons. From there, he joined the staff at Lindsay where he also served as the offensive coordinator for three years.

When D.J. Mann was hired as the head coach at Lubbock Coronado, Coach Birdwell returned to West Texas where’s been the Mustangs offensive coordinator the past two years.

“I’ve learned so much from Coach Mann," Birdwell said. "He’s family forever. Coach Mann has built this program on family and love. Of course I’ve learned a lot of X’s and O’s from him and how to run a program, but the most important thing is to love the kids, relationships are where everything starts."

Although he doesn’t have a date on when he’ll start in Tioga, Birdwell is ready to get his feet on the ground.

“Tioga has all the pieces to be successful," he said. "The support is there and I have heard nothing but good things about the kids. I’ve talked to coaches that I trust about the place and no one has said anything bad. Coach Rogers did a great job and laid a great foundation. During the entire process I got a great vibe from the community, administration and the committee."
