The American Southwest Conference will have a new commissioner after Amy Carlton announced she is stepping away from the ASC by June 30.. Carlton was selected as interim commissioner in July 2006 after Fred Jacoby retired. Carlton was named the second commissioner of the ASC in February 2007 and has held that position for the last 16 years.

Carlton joined the ASC as director of media relations in January 2002 and was promoted to assistant commissioner in May 2003. Before joining the ASC, she spent 13 years in sports information at three NCAA Division I institutions, including a 10-year stint as assistant director of media relations at Michigan.

A native of Greencastle, Ind., Carlton was elected to the executive board of the Division III Commissioners Association in January 2019 as an at-large member. She has led the ASC through numerous membership changes during her tenure and departs at a critical time for the conference.

In addition, questions surround the future of football in the ASC with the departure of Southwestern to the Southern Athletic Association this year, Sul Ross State to NCAA Division II and the Lone Star Conference, and McMurry, Texas Lutheran, and Austin College heading to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in 2024.
