Long-struggling PSJA Southwest will again be on the market for a new head coach after PSJA ISD reassigned head coach Abel Estraada after two difficult seasons in which the Javelinas won just a single game in 2021 and 2022.

It appeared Southwest had turned the corner as a program under head coach Mike Evans as despite all the challenges posed by Covid-19 in the Rio Grande Valley, PSJA made the playoffs for the first time in school history in 2020.

Rumors about Evans status swirled all off-season in the Valley and just days before the start of the 2021 season, Evans resigned his post to take a position on staff at Weslaco East and Estrada was promoted to head coach just days before the start of the season.

After struggling to a 1-9 mark in 2021, the Javelinas hoped for improvement in 2022 and after some closes losses early in the season, they simply never got on track winning just a single district game over rival PSJA Memorial and finishing 1-9.

This is just the second opening in the Rio Grande Valley this off-season with the other job opening coming at Brownsville Veterans Memorial.
