Cy-Fair 2024 QB Trey Owens (6'5, 215) took home QB MVP honors at the Next Level Athlete Texas Top 100 Showcase in Houston because he displayed tremendous accuracy and could make all of the throws, but his leadership abilities were clearly evident.
On a field full of D1 prospects, Owens led the QB positional drills and was quick to congratulate his wide receivers after routes and help others throughout the course of the day.
"On a team you want guys to play for you," Owens answered when asked about leadership as a component of the quarterback position.
"You don't want guys just to be there to have fun. Yeah, that's a part of it, but you don't want to just be singles, you want it to be one big family. I feel like that is the thing I worked on all this season, just to get closer to my teammates and have a reason to fight for each other."
With a good amount of talent coming back, Owens and his teammates have state-title aspirations for 2023.
"I think the most important part is just growing together as a team," Owens said. "We will have little team parties and go out to eat and just have a fun time, really just becoming closer."
Owens committed to Texas last week, picking the Longhorns over offers from Baylor, Houston, Rice, SMU, Texas Tech, UTSA and Washington State.
"I feel like (Steve) Sarkisian does a pretty good job of putting quarterbacks in the league," Owens said.
"I have a real close relationship with coach (AJ) Milwee. It is always comfortable and I always have fun. I play with his kids at the games, so it is just like a family already. Also, how big of a scale UT is on is a dream for me and I feel like I will get really good experience behind Quinn and Arch."
As a junior, Owens passed for 3,057 yards to lead the Bobcats to a 10-2 record, earning 17-6A Offensive MVP honors.
"I am a big pocket passer. I don't run if I don't need to. I will sit back in the pocket and take some hits if I need to. I will definitely put the ball on the money every single time, and just be confident back in the pocket."
