The final college football game of Austin Aune's career will take place Dec. 17 when North Texas faces Boise State in the Frisco Bowl. Aune, who was honorable mention All-CUS, led the Mean Green to the C-USA championship game after throwing for 3,309 yards and 32 touchdowns compared to only 13 interceptions. The 29-year-old from Argyle completed 56.7 percent of his passes and added a rushing touchdown. North Texas was 7-6 in the regular season with a second-place finish behind UTSA in C-USA. North Texas head coach Seth Littrell was fired following the loss to the Roadrunners.
Aune was the 89th overall pick of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft and spent six years in the New York Yankees organization. He was a three-star quarterback out of Argyle High School who signed with TCU after throwing for 3,411 yards and 33 touchdowns as a senior. He returned to football at Arkansas in the spring of 2018, and then to North Texas where he redshirted in 2018 and played sparingly in 2019, making his college debut in a win over UTSA on Sept. 21. Aune was 1 of 1 for 13 yards in relief. He became the full-time starter at North Texas midway through the 2021 season.
