The first step to real change for the Texas A&M offense took place Monday afternoon when offensive coordinator and tight end coach Darrell Dickey was relieved of his duties. The Aggies' offense disappointed throughout a stressful 5-7 showing in the 2022 season. They only averaged 22.8 points per game in the regular season, which was 101st in the nation. Texas A&M was 87th in first downs and 95th in total offense. Dickey didn’t call plays, but his removal opens up a spot for Jimbo Fisher to hire a play caller.

Fisher is 39-21 after five seasons in College Station. He’s 23-18 in SEC play. The Aggies missed a bowl game for the first time in his tenure in 2022. They’ve lost at least four games in four of the five seasons he’s been in charge. The only year that Texas A&M finished SEC play with fewer than three losses was the 2020 COVID year.

THE OPTIONS

Joe Brady

Brady, who came into prominence as the passing game coordinator for LSU during the 2019 championship season, is currently the quarterbacks coach for the Buffalo Bills. He was previously the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers under Matt Rhule from 2020 to 2021. Brady won the Broyles Award for best assistant coach in college football thanks to the numbers the Tigers put up with Joe Burrow at quarterback.

Garrett Riley

The Riley brothers are arguably the best offensive minds currently in college football. Lincoln is leading USC towards a PAC-12 title and a berth into the College Football Playoff in year one after a successful stint at Oklahoma. His younger brother, Garrett, followed Sonny Dykes to SMU and has the Horned Frogs on the doorstep of a Big 12 title and a spot in the CFP. TCU is averaging 41.3 points per game in 2022.

Tom Herman

Herman built his reputation as an offensive coordinator before stops as the head man at Houston and Texas. He was 22-4 in three seasons at Houston before going 32-18 in four years in charge of the Longhorns. He then spent 2021 as an offensive analyst with the Chicago Bears and 2022 as a TV analyst for CBSSports Network. He was an offensive coordinator at Texas State, Rice, Iowa State, and Ohio State before becoming a head coach.

Chad Morris

A legend in the Texas high school ranks, Morris was a state champion at Stephenville and Lake Travis before striking out into the college ranks as an offensive coordinator. He started at Tulsa before moving to Clemson from 2011 to 2014. He was the head coach at SMU and Arkansas before moving back to the offensive coordinator spot at Auburn in 2020.

Kendall Briles

Briles started his career at Baylor before strking out on his own at FAU in 2017. He was the offensive coordinator at Houston in 2018 and Florida State in 2019. He’s been at Arkansas as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at Arkansas since 2020. The Razorbacks were 9-4 in 2021 with a win in the Outback Bowl.
