The Blitz: A name to watch at WT, transfer portal on fire, and the XFL Draft featured multiple sub-FBS players

It’s that time of year when the transfer portal lights up, which is exactly what happened on Monday following the FCS selection show. There is a lot to get to this week, so let’s jump in before we sit down to feast.

Note: This is not a complete list of all the athletes that have entered the transfer portal. Check back next week for more.

Southland Conference

  • Boise State DE Casey Kline announced his intention to transfer to Lamar. Kline saw playing time in nine games for the Broncos this year.

  • Former Lamar K Bailey Giffen was drafted by the Vegas Vipers during the XFL Draft.

  • Former Texas A&M-Commerce QB Luis Perez was selected by the Vegas Vipers of the XFL. Perez led the Lions to the NCAA Division II national title.

  • Former UIW DE Justin Alexandre was chosen by the San Antonio Brahmas in the XFL Draft.

  • Lions WR Andrew Armstrong announced he entered the transfer portal.

  • The following players have announced their plan to enter the portal from Lamar. LS Luke Wallis, LB Tyler Jackson, and LB Adrian Owens, 

Southwestern Athletic Conference

  • Texas Southern OL Drake Centers accepted an invitation to compete in the HBCU Pigskin Showdown set to be played on the campus of the Marion Military Institute at noon on Dec. 17. 

  • Former Prairie View A&M QB Jawon Pass was selected by the San Antonio Brahmas during the XFL Draft.

  • PVAMU P Caleb Darbone entered the transfer portal.

Western Athletic Conference

  • Washington State DL Ahmir Crowder received an offer from Tarleton. Crowder appeared in 19 games in his four seasons with the Cougars, including 12 games this year.

  • Sam Houston received a commitment from 2023 DB Chantson Prox. The Canton, Texas native also held an offer from Wyoming.

  • Former FIU and Co-Lin edge Nate White announced he will transfer to Sam Houston. White was a 3-star recruit in high school and spent his first two years at FIU before transferring to Co-Lin for 2022.

  • The Bearkats had three players selected in the XFL Draft. WR Jequez Ezzard was 

  • drafted by the D.C. Defenders, DL Joseph Wallace was selected by the Seattle Sea Dragons, and DT P.J. Hall was chosen by the Houston Roughnecks.

  • Former Tarleton CB Devin Hafford was selected by the San Antonio Brahmas in the XFL Draft.

  • SHSU LB Philip Joest, DB Taylen Blaylock, K Reed Honshtein, 

Lone Star Conference

  • West Texas A&M OL Zane Madison, ATH Michael Arceneaux II, and WR Kenneath Redd entered the transfer portal.

  • A name to watch in the Buffs search for a new head coach is former UIW defensive coordinator Justin Deason. Deason spent three seasons at WT as a position coach and special teams coordinator under Don Carthel and the defensive coordinator during Texas A&M-Commerce national title run in 2017 under Colby Carthel.

American Southwest Conference

  • Former Howard Payne standout WR Jake Parker signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. The 2021 ASC Offensive Player of the Year spent last season with the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, who are the German Football League champions.

  • Moody High School 2023 ATH Cooper Staton announced his commitment to Mary Hardin-Baylor. Staton gained 295 yards rushing and 356 yards receiving for the Bearcats this season.

  • The Cru also picked up a commitment from 2023 RB Dallas Payne. The Stratford High School product gained 1,052 yards rushing (7.9 yards per attempt average) and 12 touchdowns this year.

  • Former East Texas Baptist LB Justice Henson signed a free-agent contract with the Northern Arizona Wranglers of the Indoor Football League.
