One of the biggest potential storylines of the offseason here in Texas was put to rest Tuesday morning when SMU quarterback Tanner Mordecai told reporters after practice that he plans to turn pro after the season. The Midway product began his college career at Oklahoma before transferring to SMU prior to the 2021 season. He started all 12 games for the Mustangs in 2021, throwing for 3,628 yards and a school-record 39 touchdown passes. Mordecai posted eight 300-yard games and five games with four or more touchdown passes.

The 2022 season hasn't gone as easily for Mordecai. He was in a quarterback battle throughout the offseason with former four-star recruit Preston Stone. Mordecai emerged as the starter, but a concussion forced him to the sideline midway through the season. Stone stepped in and impressed before an injury ended his season and inserted Mordecai back into the starting lineup. Mordecai has thrown for 3,078 yards and 29 touchdowns with one regular season game remaining.

Stone and true freshman Kevin Jennings will battle for the starting job going into 2023 given that neithr enter the transfer portal.
