Add Houston Christian to the growing list of schools that will have a new head coach in 2023 after Vic Shealy announced his resignation on Monday afternoon, as first reported by Chris Vannini of the Athletic. Shealy started the Huskies program in 2012 and led the Huskies to an 18-75 overall record in nine seasons.

His most successful season was 2019, where he led the Huskies to a 5-7 record. 2020 was expected to be the year HCU made a bid for the Southland Conference title behind the play of quarterback Bailey Zappe and linebacker Caleb Johnson. However, the CoVID-19 pandemic forced the Huskies to play mainly FBS schools with HCU opting out of the spring season.

Zappe is currently the backup quarterback for the New England Patriots, while Johnson is a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars after beginning his career with the Chicago Bears. Shealy coached three Huskies who became All-Americans, the late Garrett Dolan (2016 and 2017), Andre Walker (2019), and Gamar Birdy Brito (2019).

"We are extremely appreciative of all Vic has done for HCU in starting this program from scratch and making a positive impact in a lot of young men's lives," HCU Director of Athletics Steve Moniaci said in a release. "He will forever be remembered as the first head coach in HCU Football history and we commend him for taking on this challenge in one of the toughest Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) conferences in the country. We wish him and his wife, Holly, all the best on their next endeavor."

"Holly and I have a lot of gratitude toward Dr. (Robert) Sloan and Steve Moniaci for giving us an opportunity to start a football program here," Shealy said. "The support from the staff and faculty has been tremendous, for us as coaches and players, to give us a foundation for the program. I understand we're in a game where the scoreboard matters at this level. There are things I wish we had accomplished before I left, but there are a lot of things we did accomplish that I'm proud of. My hope is the next coach can come in, pick up where we left off and help these players realize those goals they had when they got here can still be achieved."

HCU announced Roger Hinshaw, the lone remaining member of the original coaching staff, will serve as interim head coach while the Huskies search for Shealy’s replacement.
