Texas State is parting ways with head football coach Jake Spavital following the Week 13 loss at home to Louisiana, as first reported by Football Scoop's Zach Barnett. The Bobcats finished the season at 4-8 overall and 2-6 in the Sun Belt. They never finished with a .500 or better record in the four seasons under Spavital, who took over prior to the 2019 season after successful stints as an offensive coordinator at Texas A&M, Cal, and West Virginia.

Spavital leaves San Marcos with a 13-35 record in charge. He was 9-23 in Sun Belt competition. The Bobcats went 3-9 in his first year at the helm back in 2019. The number dipped to two wins in 2020. Texas State won four games in 2021 for the first time since 2014, but a second straight 4-8 campaign sealed his fate. Texas State moved to the FBS ranks in 2012. The Bobcats have only finished above .500 once – that was in 2014 with Dennis Franchione as the head coach. The only other record at .500 or better was a 6-6 finish in 2013. Everett Withers was 7-29 in his three years in charge from 2016 to 2018. Franchione was 20-28.

Spavital signed a five-year contract when he was hired ahead of the 2019 campaign. He made it four years before the administration moved on because head coaches rarely make it to the last year of a contract – they’re either extended or terminated. Texas State appointed Kelly Damphousse as school president back in April.

Potential hires are former Incarnate Word head coach Eric Morris, current UIW head coach G.J. Kinne, and Sam Houston head man K.C. Keeler.
