These are the teams you don't want to sleep on during the 2022 Texas high school football playoffs:

Class 6A

Cy-Fair: The Bobcats aren’t getting much press in the Houston area this year, but Jeff Miller’s squad has rattled off nine straight wins and they are peaking at the right time. If you don’t know the name Trey Owens, get to know the 2024 signal caller, he’s the real deal.

Class 5A Division I

Brownsville Veterans Memorial: Most of the talk in the RGV at the 5A-Division I level has centered around PSJA North and Edinburg Vela, but Kelley Lee’s squad is a force as well with their unique “Ground Strike” offense. Vets has won eight of their last nine games and put up an incredible 85 points in the season finale last week.

Class 5A Division II

San Antonio Veterans Memorial: San Antonio Veterans Memorial has quietly put together one of the best teams in the Alamo City. The Patriots have one of the state’s best running backs in James Peoples, and they’ve got experience defending the vaunted Slot-T offense of Liberty Hill, they played the Panthers to a seven-point game earlier this season.

Class 4A Division I

Alice: The Coyotes have one of the best signal callers in South Texas in Cutter Stewart and they’ve shown they can play with one of the best in the region in the regular season losing to Calallen 37-30 in a thriller. The 8-2 Coyotes only other loss was to Class 5A-Division I Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial.

Class 4A Division II

Canyon West Plains: West Plains, with a team primarily made up of freshman and sophomores has shocked the panhandle this year posting an impressive 6-4 record in their first varsity season. They have improved every week of the season under HC Adam Cummings and will be a tough out in the playoffs.

Class 3A Division I

Diboll: The Lumberjacks made the regional finals a year ago, but in Region III most of the talk has centered around the teams in 11-3A Division I and 12-3A Division I. Diboll plays a physical brand of football and they have good speed across the board, what’s made Diboll more dangerous this season is their ability to throw the ball.

Class 3A Division II

Tidehaven: The Tigers are a dynamic offensive squad and have won their past six games, Region IV in 3A-Division II is wide open and Tidehaven has one South Texas real hidden gems in RB Joseph Dodds. Tidehaven hasn’t had a ton of recent playoff success, but the bracket is wide open in 2022.

Class 2A Division I

Axtell: After winning just four games in the past three years, first-year head coach Craig Horn has completely turned things around for the Longhorns who finished the regular season at 7-2. Axtell closed the season with five straight wins and aside from regional favorite Crawford Region II is wide open.

Class 2A Division II

New Home: The Leopards since moving up to eleven-man football a few years ago have been very competitive year in and year out, but this might be Jon Ward’s best team overall. NHHS has a lethal passing attack that will make them a tough customer for the usual regional contenders in Region I.
