Harker Heights offensive tackle Jaydon Chatman has had quite the year. 

The 6A-District 12 first-team selection’s impressive work on the field has led to attention from programs across the country. 

“I would say (he’s) easily a top-three offensive lineman in the state,” Rivals national recruiting analyst Nick Harris said.

Chatman handles tough competitors well and is an efficient athlete for his position. The current junior’s recruitment has kept him busy.

His first offer came from Texas offensive line coach Kyle Flood on September 18, 2021, and offers from schools like Alabama, Oklahoma, and Baylor rolled in afterward. 

As his junior year winds down, Chatman is taking the time to reflect on his recruitment so far. 

“It’s kind of calmed down a little bit as of now,” Chatman said. “It’s been going pretty good. (I’ve) been taking my time with it.” 

The 6-foot-4-inch Chatman has already taken visits to schools like Oklahoma, Alabama, and LSU. He is scheduled to take official visits to Texas and Texas A&M next month. 

As he continues to shop schools, Chatman is focused on landing at a place where he can immediately fit in. He cites connection to other players and overall environment as some of the most important factors he looks at when evaluating a specific school. Chatman also wants to be somewhere that he can develop throughout his college career. 

“(I’m looking for) more of a family aspect,” he said. “Where I can just get in and keep it rolling.”

But before he heads off to college, the 286-pound lineman is set on helping his team make a deep playoff run in his senior season.

Last season, the Knights had a solid 9-2 record and ended the season with a second-round playoff loss to Desoto. Chatman has focused on refining minor details of his play as he wraps up his high school career. 

“(I’m) just working on my feet and my technique when punching through someone on a block,” he said. “Just staying square and scheming the man in front of me, little things like that.” 

The four-star recruit continues to look ahead as he prepares for the next chapter in his football career.

“I try a little bit every day to see what my next steps forward (are to) follow my senior year into college,” Chatman said. “(I’m) seeing what’s best for me and what I need to do to prepare myself.”
