ARLINGTON - Todd Dodge will ride off into the sunset having won three straight state championships.

Coaching in his final game before retirement, Austin Westlake’s head coach watched his defense dominate and his QB/WR duo of Cade Klubnik and Jaden Greathouse make big play after big play in a 40-21 victory over Denton Guyer in the 6A Division II state championship at AT&T Stadium on Saturday.

Guyer, which lost to these Chaps two years ago, actually led 14-13 at halftime and then 21-20 midway through the third quarter after Jackson Arnold’s second rushing touchdown. But Westlake took complete control from that point forward to complete an undefeated 16-0 season.

The Westlake defensive line kicked it into high gear to completely shut out Guyer in the fourth quarter.  Westlake was able to force a whopping eight sacks onto Arnold to choke the Guyer offense out. DL Colton Vasek led the way with three sacks and three tackles for loss earning him defensive MVP honors. DL Byers Petty lead the team in tackles with 11 and DL Will Courtney was not far behind with nine solo tackles.

Klubnick was slowed down in the first half but came out fast in the second to finish with 280 yards and four touchdowns through the air while scampering for 60 yards. Greathouse showed out with huge catches to demoralize the Guyer secondary finishing with 236 yards and three touchdowns earning his offensive MVP honors. WR Bryce Chambers caught a quick 15-yard touchdown.

While Denton Guyer (14-2) fell short of a state championship, Arnold made sure to put his body on the line to try and get the Wildcats the win. He threw for 183 yards and one touchdown while running a punishing 56 yards for two touchdowns.

The Guyer defense had success in the first half but eventually succumbed to the might that was the Westlake offense. DL Marquan Pope lead the team in tackles with 12. Key turnovers by the defense were a big reason Guyer was able to compete in the first half. DL Moore recovered a fumble while DB Eli Bowen snatched an interception.
