Ray Biles has been at Lorena for 30 years.

Prior to Thursday, he had never won a state championship.

His 200th victory as a head coach gave him exactly that as his Leopards out-physicalled a very tough Brock team to defeat the Eagles 35-18 in the Class 3A Division I UIL Football State Championship at AT&T Stadium.

Defenses dominated the game, and the state title was decided in the trenches. Both teams combined for five sacks - DL Baxter Bankston and DL Braylon Henry had three apiece for Lorena while Brock’s DL Cooper Massey and DL Camden Harris teamed up for two. But the balance fell towards Lorena as Bankston accounted for three tackles for loss. DL Cason Pitts also helped slow the Eagles with two TFLs.

Lorena (14-2) got out to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. A big part of that was the combination of QB Ryne Abel and RB Rhett Hanson, who poked holes in the Brock defense.

Abel was able to find space down the field finishing with 163 yards and a touchdown. Hanson charged through for 196 yards and three touchdowns and lateralled it to Pitts for a touchdown to keep things in control for Lorena late in the game. WR Jadon Porter opened space down the field with 85 yards.

Brock (15-1) tried to keep pace with their own combo of QB Tyler Moody and RB Kutter Wilson. Moody made tight passes to finish with 170 yards and two touchdowns. Wilson battled through injuries finished with 171 yards and one touchdown.

WR Potts created big plays on his three receptions for 88 yards and one touchdown. DL Dillon Mueller and DL Colton Stephenson both finished with a team high eight tackles each. Mueller also forced an interception as well as helped the Brock defense recover a fumble. DL Cooper Massey and DL Camden Harris teamed up for two sacks.
