The state of Texas used to produce elite linebackers at the same rate it currently produces quarterbacks and wide receivers. Denton Ryan junior Anthony Hill Jr. is a throwback. The 6-2, 225-pound blur of violence rarely struggles when the pads come on, but he does face a difficult decision as the holder of 30 offers from major colleges across the country.

Hill is the top-ranked linebacker in the entire 2023 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports composite. He’s ranked 19th in the nation for the nation and is considered one of the handful of Texans in contention for five-star status.

The junior exploded onto the scene as a sophomore in 2020, recording 105 tackles, including 11 for loss, and three sacks. That brought attention from in-state powers such as Texas and Texas A&M, as well as out-of-state bluebloods such as Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma and Ohio State.

The MaxPreps All-American joined Dave Campbell’s Texas Football for a Q&A following a recent win over Frisco Wakeland.

1. Do you remember when you fell in love with football?

It was flag football because I got to run around. Basketball was too soft. Football is where I gravitated towards.

2. Who was your favorite player growing up?

It was Russell Wilson, and it still is. I grew up in the Legion of Boom era, so Seattle was my favorite team.

3. Did you have a favorite college team?

No.

4. What was it like to get your first offer?

It was my freshman year from Florida A&M. I was excited at the time and knew that I could do something in this sport if I kept working. I still try to use that mindset.

5. What makes a good recruiter?

Someone that can relate to you and is down to earth. Not blow you up but know how to talk to you.

6. What is the most challenging part of the recruiting process?

Probably picking a school. I have 30 offers, so it is hard to narrow that down and pick one school.

7. What advice would you go back and give yourself before the first day of practice in seventh grade?

I’d tell myself to stay up on my grades and take school as important as possible.

8. What is your favorite movie?

“House Party.”

9. Who is your favorite artist?

Lil Durk.

10. If you aren’t playing football, what would you be doing?

Playing video games like NBA 2K and Madden.
