Texarkana Texas High OLB/DE Derrick Brown (6’4, 220) collected 28 offers from programs across the country before settling on a commitment to the Texas Longhorns back in late July.

He’s currently ranked No. 44 in the DCTF Hot 100 and is rated as the No. 4 DE prospect in Texas.

In the time since his commitment, Brown has become one of the more vocal individuals in the #22EFFECT class that Steve Sarkisian and his staff have put together.

The Texas High product has been very bullish on the 2022 class in Austin. Especially after a couple of top priority national-level commitments have kept the momentum heading in a positive direction.

“Honestly, I think we are going to come out on top and have the #1 recruiting class in the Class of 2022. Just letting y’all know we ain’t done yet!” he said with emphasis to reporters after the game on Thursday.

Brown, like other recruits, has made Twitter his medium of communication for getting his point across regarding his future college destination. Almost daily, Brown can be seen pumping out tweets connected to other Texas commits and targets.

Following a tough loss for Texas in Fayetteville on Saturday, Brown took to social media to reassure fans where his loyalties lie.

Scouting Report: As a prospect, Brown checks all the boxes for what college coaches are looking for in a modern-day stand-up rush end. As a rangy athlete, Brown possesses above standard height and length with a frame that has room to grow. From that standpoint, he is all upside and will need to emphasize adding weight at the next level to progress as a player.

Gerry Stanford and the Texas High staff are also finding ways to utilize Brown on offense in situational moments.

Against Forney Brown was inserted when the Tigers were in the red zone on a fade ball for a touchdown. The play ended up being on ESPN’s “You Got Mossed” segment. While his future is likely not on offense, it gives some perspective to his level of athletic ability.

Brown stays in constant contact with the staff in Austin. He talks to many members on both sides of the ball to build relationships on The Forty Acres.

“I’m still talking to the whole coaching staff day in and day out. Even offensive coaches, the tight end coach, Bo Davis (DT coach), o-linemen coach… even special teams.”

While the staff remains committed to making him a priority even after his commitment, they are also formulating ideas for where his best fit might be on the field. His future very well may be on the edge, but Brown could also make for a good inside linebacker with his ability to cover ground.

“I’ll be playing the same as DeMarvion Overshown, but when I first get there I’ll be playing outside linebacker. The inside linebacker coach wants me to come in and play a little bit inside. I’ll be playing both,” Brown told reporters.

Brown’s upside and athleticism is tremendous. For now, he’ll continue to help lead his Tigers to a winning season this fall and maintain his infectious presence on the Twittersphere.
