It doesn’t get much better in the Houston area than two of the perennial schools in the Cypress-Fairbanks district. Jeff Miller fields a young Bobcats team led by linebacker Hunter Warren, one of the team’s few returning starters, while Sean McAuliffe’s Mustangs look to break through after a disappointing bi-district exit in 2020.

Crosby vs No. 1 Carthage

Two teams that played for a state championship last season meet up in this cross-classification battle. Carthage are the far-and-away favorite to repeat in 4A DII with a host of stars returning on defense including linebacker Kip Lewis and state title MVP defensive back Brandon King. Crosby’s breaking in a host of new starters after a state runner-up run but expect the Cougars to come out and give the Bulldogs an early test, especially with wideout Kameren Kirkwood back in the mix.

If you want a small school game to keep an eye on, keep it locked here. These are two teams that are currently unranked but could be in the picture this season. We have the Raiders as a slight favorite by less than a touchdown and that should be enough to entice you. West Rusk’s Torami Dixon leads one of the most experienced teams in 3A DII while East Chambers QB Jacoby Perrault will try to stay out of his grasps all night.

Does this one really need to be sold to you? You have two name-brand powers going at it with one being only a slight favorite. This will be the first time we potentially see of star prospect Caleb Burton catching for Bo Edmundson, the next-in-line at the Lake Travis QB factory. But the Cavs are hosting an equally state-ready Warriors team that fell just shy to state runner-up Southlake Carroll a year ago. Look for Bob Wager’s squad to try and frustrate the Lake Travis offense with star defenders Ernest Cooper IV and Trevell Johnson. And watch out for a big special teams swing or two.

Alvin Shadow Creek vs No. 4 Galena Park North Shore

Two Houston area powers turning over respective leaves will give each other a very worthy test. Shadow Creek breaks in 16 new starters after their first year in 6A but the Sharks have a plethora of young talent that just needs game time to break out. It’s not as much of a rebuild for Jon Kay’s North Shore, but replacing Dematrius Davis and Shadrach Banks isn’t easy, nonetheless. Top defensive back prospect Denver Harris mans a defense that returns a lot and will let the offense break in new playmakers as the Mustangs get back in the state title hunt.
