The college football world has been turned on its head recently with news of Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) and Texas and OU’s departure from the Big 12 to the SEC taking center stage.

For some Texas high school recruits, this would drastically alter their recruiting process. For Texas High defensive end Derrick Brown, it didn’t matter.

The 4-star recruit and 44th ranked Class of 2022 player in Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s Hot 100 has it narrowed down to two final schools, Baylor and Texas, but it wasn’t the NIL or the SEC rage that swayed his decision.

For Brown it is simple: whether it’s the Bears or the Longhorns, he wants the best opportunity on the field.

“I'm not really worried about the NIL,” Brown said. “I'm worried about who’s going to put me in the best situation, who is going to get me to the league, who is going to develop me more and who is going to get me to my full potential.”

On top of Baylor and Texas, Brown enjoys 26 other Division I offers. After his first FBS offer on Dec. 25, 2020, Brown had an eventful January, racking up 14 offers in the month alone.

Brown is set to announce his commitment on July 31.

While his final decision has already been made, Baylor and Texas’ long ties with Brown have helped both programs earn a spot in his final two.

“Baylor and Texas have been there since my sophomore season,” said Brown. “[They are] a good environment for me to be in... I got a good bond with all of the players and coaches, and I like the feel of both cities.”

On July 1, three days after Brown uploaded his top two to Twitter, the NIL bill went into effect. Other schools reached out to Brown in talks of NIL, but his final two schools remained the same.

There are six experts on 247Sports.com that have predicted Brown’s commitment. All six experts have the edge rusher landing in Austin, TX. Often times, this would be a pretty good indicator of where a recruit was headed.

However, for Derrick Brown’s commitment – expect the unexpected.

“I’m gonna mess with a lot of people’s heads come July 31,” he said.
