Regional Outlook

Liberty Hill’s inspiring playoff run from 2020 got them all the way to the state semifinals, but can the Panthers repeat their success in 2021 with the loss of ten offensive starters from their vaunted Slot-T offense?

13-5A Division II appears to be a two-horse race with Leander Rouse and Brenham back to battle it out for the district title, both teams bring back a majority of starters in Brenham’s case nearly their entire defense is back in the fold. Georgetown East View returns nine defensive starters and if they can fill a few key spots on offense they Patriots will be more than a handful as well. Glenn took some heavy offensive losses, but the Grizzlies should be able to hold off a strong challenge from Bastrop.

Liberty Hill, despite the heavy losses will still run roughshod through 14-5A Division II, with really only McCallum and Marble Falls capable of seriously making the Panthers work in the fourth quarter. The battle for the final playoff spot will go to Northeast who still has a sizeable lead over Travis and Crockett.

The suburban San Antonio district will again be fun to watch especially spots two through five where Alamo Heights, Medina Valley, Floresville and Tivy on paper appear to be evenly matched. One thing that’s not up for debate is Boerne Champion being the favorite in this district, the Chargers return seven starters on both sides of the ball, the real question is do they have enough to win the region?

The RGV district was split into zones after the pandemic a year ago, this year the nine teams will get to battle it out for bragging rights and one of the four playoff spots. Mercedes was the runner-up a year ago, but the Tigers look ready to take the mantle with six starters back on both sides of the ball. Mission Veterans Memorial was a big disappointment a year ago, but the Patriots look more than ready to get back to playoff form after a strong summer. Pioneer was the darling of the state a year ago and despite the major losses with just two starters back on both sides of the ball, don’t be surprised if the Diamondbacks are back in the playoffs along with Edcouch-Elsa.
