Matthew Golden is that dude on the Klein Cain football team.

The DCTF 4-star recruit and recent TCU commit is rated the 50th best player in Texas and ranked seventh among WRs.

Golden, now without fellow 4-star running back and Texas commit Jaydon Blue, headlines a high-powered Klein Cain offense that averaged over 47 points per game in 2020.

Golden is a Power Five committed football player and a relatively well-known figure in the Houston area, accounting for over 4500 followers on Instagram and Twitter combined, but you’d never guess that when talking to him.

“Guys that are big-time recruits, they're celebrities now, on social media, and everywhere else,” Klein Cain coach James Clancy said. “For him to have a down-to-earth approach is something really refreshing.”

Ask Golden what he did when he realized he was a highly-rated recruit or what he plans to do upon arriving at TCU and the answer remains the same: put in work.

“Just working every day,” Golden said. “I knew the offers were going to come in, but I kept my head down and kept working.”

During the summer months, Golden works out with his trainer every day, looking to hone his skills on route running, cuts, agility, speed, weights and more.

Listed at 6-0, 190 pounds, Golden is an explosive threat that can beat defenders in a variety of ways. He isn’t afraid of being physical and retains the same big playmaking ability that began during his sophomore year when he was returning punts for touchdowns.

While Golden checks all the boxes athletically, Clancy believes Golden’s best trait may not be physical at all.

“He plays with a lot of confidence,” Clancy said. “One thing that I've always tried to instill in him is: if you're going to have big goals, then you got to believe in yourself. You got to have habits that align yourself to go achieve those goals. That’s something that's always stood out… it's been exciting to watch that grow over the last few years.”

Golden broke out into the recruiting scene during his junior year, racking up 21 total offers, eight of which from Power Five schools. By the end of 2020, Golden realized he had options, marking his first SEC offer from Arkansas as a landmark in his process.

When it came time to select a school, Golden chose TCU just 10 days after his official visit.

“Honestly, the program fit me really well,” Golden said. “Just the way their playstyle is, and the way they throw the ball and everything. The coaches and the relationship I had with them felt good, so that’s when I made my decision.

“It’s close to home. That’s really most of it. I feel like I could be really successful going to TCU.”

While Golden looks forward to his time with the Horned Frogs, his senior season at Klein Cain lies ahead. With already an impressive high school resume, Golden still thinks there is more to prove.

“This is gonna be my biggest year,” he said. “I plan on getting 2000 receiving yards and at least 15 touchdowns with a district title.”

When Golden does leave Klein Cain, the Hurricanes will have big shoes to fill at the WR position. According to Clancy, to the people who will be vying to take his spot in years to come, Golden shows nothing but support.

“One of the things that I always thought was neat about him and a couple of our other varsity players is when they go out to the sub-varsity track meets and root on all the freshmen and JV kids that are football players,” said Clancy. “That just kind of shows you his understanding of investment and understanding of why the future players in our program are important.”

James Clancy isn’t the only Clancy that has taken a fondness of Golden. James’ six year-old son has formed a special relationship with Golden, a relationship that began during Golden’s freshman year.

“It's kind of funny, just watching him always check in on my son's flag football games and asking him how he's doing and things like that,” Clancy said.

“He’s one of my biggest fans,” Golden added. “I turn to him all the time. He’s just a real happy kid. I just like being around him, and he looks up to me.”

As it looks now, Golden has five more seasons in purple: one at Klein Cain and four at TCU. Golden and the Hurricanes look ahead to the 2021 season, looking to capture the District 15-6A crown.
