Rice football has added a commitment from transfer quarterback Luke McCaffrey, Texas Football has confirmed. The news was initially reported by The Athletic's Sam Khan.
McCaffrey played his last season at Nebraska before entering the transfer portal over the offseason. He originally ended up at Louisville before entering the portal again a week later. Thanks to the NCAA's new regulations, McCaffrey is expected to be immediately eligible and have four years left to play four years.
The redshirt freshman from Highlands Ranch, Colo., started two games for the Cornhuskers last season, completing 28 of 57 passes for 286 yards, a touchdown and four interceptions against Penn State and Illinois. He also rushed for 530 yards and four touchdowns in 11 appearances over the past two seasons.
McCaffrey, the brother of Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey, was ranked the No. 257 overall player and best player in Colorado in the class of 2019. He picked Nebraska over Michigan, Ohio State, Washington and several others. Christian played for Rice head coach Mike Bloomgren while at Stanford.
McCaffrey enters an open quarterback battle at Rice this fall. Underclassmen JoVoni Johnson and Wiley Green have both started games for the Owls. Rice also added Weber State transfer Jake Constantine over the offseason.
