Maybe we should not be surprised by what Cameron Ward is accomplishing for UIW this spring. But for someone who spent his final high school season as quarterback of a team that rarely threw the ball, what Ward continues to accomplish is eye-opening.

The freshman completed 39-of-65 passes for 470 yards and another six touchdowns in a 75-45 loss to Nicholls.

In four games this spring, Ward has thrown for 1,524 yards with 20 touchdowns and only three interceptions.

If Ward continues to post over 400 yards and six touchdowns passing each week, he will continue to find himself with a helmet sticker.

Sophomore Drake Johnson had quite a game for Mary Hardin-Baylor in a 23-15 win over Hardin-Simmons in the American Southwest Conference title game.

Johnson made his presence felt early with a blocked punt following the Cowboys opening drive. The Cru recovered the ball at their 45-yard line, which set up the first touchdown of the game for UMHB.

Johnson was not done after the blocked punt. With four minutes remaining in the game, HSU had the ball in Cru territory with momentum following an interception.

The sophomore from Ridge Point High School jumped the route on the pass and took the interception to the Cowboys 36-yard line to seal the win for UMHB.

Troy Yowman showed his passing ability three weeks ago when East Texas Baptist nearly upset Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Last Saturday, Yowman was spectacular leading the Tigers to a 51-20 win at home over Texas Lutheran in the American Southwest Conference playoffs.

The freshman from Beaumont West Brook High School completed 26-of-38 passes for 424 yards and five touchdowns.

Yowman’s stats over the spring’s final two weeks should settle any possible quarterback debate heading to the fall.

He completed 50-of-86 passes for 778 yards and nine touchdowns while the offense produced 79 points in his final two starts.
