Perhaps the most high-profiled Texas high school football head coaching job that’s opened this offseason, is no longer open.

Brock will name Weatherford head coach/athletic director Billy Mathis as its next head coach, sources tell TexasFootball.com.

He emerged from a solid field of five finalists on Wednesday afternoon that included one internal candidate, a Central Texas head coach with ties to Brock, a current Big Country athletic director with a solid head coaching resume and a state title winning DFW defensive coordinator.

Mathis, who was an assistant at fellow Parker County powerhouse Aledo, got his first head coaching job in 2017 where he took over, what was at the time, a total rebuild at Weatherford.

The Kangaroos went winless in Mathis’ first season, but in the next three seasons Weatherford posted records of 4-7 in 2018, 7-4 in 2019 and 5-6 in 2020, with three straight trips to the playoffs. Mathis was promoted to Weatherford ISD athletic director in the spring of 2020 as well.

Mathis takes over a Brock program that has advanced to at least the third round of the playoffs in every year since starting up varsity football in 2014.

There’s big shoes to fill for Mathis, who replaces Chad Worrell, who was an incredible 91-12 in seven years leading the Eagles, including a state title in 2015 and another state title game appearance in 2017.

Brock, who spent the entire regular season as the No. 1 team in 3A-Division I, was upset in the regional semifinals by eventual state champion Tuscola Jim Ned and finished the 2020 season with a 12-1 record.

Expect Weatherford to likely make an internal promotion for the athletic director position and then WISD will post the head football coaching job in the middle of next week more than likely.
