On Friday afternoon, South Grand Prairie head coach Brent Whitson informed his team he would be leaving Grand Prairie ISD to take the athletic director/head football coach position at Denison High School.
Whitson departs SGP after 10 seasons where he posted a 54-53 overall record, while laregely competing in some of the state’s toughest Class 6A districts. His two best seasons leading the Warriors were 2015 and 2017 when South Grand Prairie posted 7-5 records and advanced to the area round of the playoffs.
Prior to his time at SGP, Whitson spent four seasons at Richardson High where he went from 0-10 in his first season in 2007 to 5-5 in 2008 and then back-to-back winning seasons in 2009-10.
Whitson has a strong record of success as a head coach in his native Oklahoma, where he started his journey as a head coach at Shawnee High. In four seasons there he posted a 32-15 record and led SHS to an Oklahoma Class 5A state title in 2003. In 2004, Whitson took over at Oklahoma 6A power Broken Arrow where in three seasons he posted a 22-14 record before departing Oklahoma for the state of Texas.
Coach Whitson takes over a Denison program that posted four consecutive winning seasons under former head coach Chad Rogers and brings back a good amount of talent from a 7-4 playoff team in 2020, including Notre Dame running back commit Jadarian Price.
