Lamar (0-0) at No. 9 Nicholls (1-0)

When: 3 p.m. Saturday at John L. Guidry Stadium in Thibodaux, La.

Broadcast: ESPN+

The Matchup: The Blane Morgan era finally begins at Lamar this week. Morgan has begun a rebuilding process for the Cardinals with his recent recruiting classes. However, the challenge ahead this week is a tall task.

Nicholls is the preseason Southland Conference favorite and perennial FCS playoff team. The Colonels opened the season defeating overmatched NCAA Division II Lincoln (Mo.) 87-3. Nicholls is a deep and talented team.

Players to Watch:

Lamar - Marcellus Johnson, WR, So, Killeen, Texas (Killeen HS)

Courtlon Allen, DB, Jr, Fort Worth, Texas (Trinity Valley)

Kyron Norwood, DB, Sr, Hattiesburg, Miss. (Pearl River CC)

Nicholls - Lindsey Scott Jr., QB, Sr, Zachary, La. (Missouri)

Julien Gums, RB, Jr, New Orleans, La. (De La Salle HS)

Dellary Oubre, LB, So, Destrehan, La. (St. Charles Catholic HS)

Key to Victory: Lamar will need a flawless performance while forcing multiple turnovers and that might not be enough this week. Nicholls is a very talented squad on a mission to earn a trip to the FCS national title game.

Lamar will use multiple players at each position this spring with coach Morgan using this time to evaluate for the fall. The Cardinals have a couple of talented wide receivers but will need to lean on its defense with so many young players at key positions on offense.

Prediction: Nicholls by 35
