Lubbock ISD announced the hiring of Cedar Hill QB Coach/Recruiting Coordinator D.J. Mann as the next head football coach/campus coordinator at Lubbock Coronado High School on Thursday.

Mann, a 2002 graduate of Lubbock Coronado who played for Butch Henderson, returns to his hometown and alma mater to take over one of the most successful programs in West Texas.

“It’s a dream come true for me, not just to be a head coach, but to get to come home to Lubbock and Coronado High School is just surreal," Mann said. "A lot of who I am today as a man is because of the teachers and mentors in Lubbock and specifically Coronado High School, this is a dream job for me."

He replacing Seth Parr, who, after a 12-1 season in 2020, departed to take over as athletic director/head football coach at Anna High School in the DFW area.

Coronado’s new head coach played his college football at West Texas A&M and has coaching experience all over the state of Texas. Mann started out as a junior high assistant in Amarillo ISD in the Palo Duro feeder system in 2006 before heading to the DFW area to become the offensive coordinator at Dallas Spruce High School.

In 2008, Mann moved over to Wylie High School as an offensive assistant under Bill Howard and was on staff at Wylie’s Class 6A-Division II state runner-up squad. In 2010, Mann joined the staff of Greg Owens at Sulphur Springs where he coached the wide receivers, working with then offensive coordinator Jeff Riordan.

When Riordan was named athletic director/head football coach at Crosby High in the Houston area in 2012, Mann joined Riordan’s staff at Crosby where he served as the offensive coordinator for one of the most explosive offenses in the Houston area. Mann called plays and coordinated the Crosby offense that in 2014 advanced to the Class 5A Division II state semifinals. Mann returned to the DFW area in 2016 where he was on staff at Carrollton Ranchview, before in 2017 joining Carlos Lynn’s staff at Cedar Hill. Mann worked with the quarterbacks and handled the recruiting coordinator duties for the Longhorns who advanced to the 6A-Division II state title game.

Don’t look for Coronado to change much from their high flying, spread offense that’s become a staple in the Hub City as Coach Mann is well-schooled in the Air Raid offense. But Mann’s offense expects to have versatility as there will be some power-spread elements sprinkled into the system as well.
