Small College Power Poll: Tarleton debuts outside Top 3; Trinity makes its case

Each week Dave Campbell’s Texas Football staff gives their power rankings of the small college football teams in Texas.

Note: Teams are measured against the overall strength of their conference. Only teams that have played are ranked.

  1. Mary Hardin-Baylor (1-0) Last Week: 1 - UMHB had a scheduled bye week last week, and with the American Southwest Conference postponing all games this week the Cru will have at least two weeks between games. Next: vs Southwestern at noon Feb. 27th.

  2. Trinity (2-0) Last Week: 2 - The Tigers only solidified their hold on the second spot in the ranking with a dominant 37-7 road win over Millsaps. A tough test awaits this week. NEXT: vs Hendrix at noon Feb. 20th.

  3. East Texas Baptist (2-0) Last Week: 3 - The ETBU defense was huge for the Tigers last week scoring three touchdowns. With all games postponed this week, the Tigers have two weeks to prepare for a Louisiana College team still waiting to play its first game. NEXT: at Louisiana College at 1 p.m. Feb. 27th.

  4. Texas Lutheran (1-0) Last Week: 4 - The Bulldogs were one of many teams whose games were postponed last week. TLU was scheduled for a bye this week so they have had a little more time to adjust to recent schedule changes. NEXT: vs. Sul Ross State at 1 p.m. Feb. 27th.

  5. Tarleton (0-1) Last Week: NR - The Texans had an impressive debut to kick off their first season in FCS against McNeese. Tarleton has another first this week when they travel to play their first FBS opponent. NEXT: at New Mexico State at TBA Feb. 20th.

  6. Howard Payne (0-1) Last Week: 5 - Everyone sliding down a spot this week is an indication of how impressive Tarleton was last week. HPU is in a tough position with last week’s and this week’s games postponed followed by a scheduled bye week. NEXT: at Sul Ross State at TBA Mar. 6th.

  7. Austin College (0-1) Last Week: 6 - The ‘Roos missed out on a chance to amend for a tough loss against rival Trinity when the winter weather hit the state of Texas. Austin College has a scheduled bye week this week. NEXT: vs Millsaps at noon Feb. 27th.

  8. Southwestern (0-1) Last Week: 7 - The Pirates opened its season with a loss to ETBU, who was picked to finish second in the preseason poll. Southwestern has an extra week to prepare to face a national powerhouse and the ASC favorite. NEXT: at Mary Hardin-Baylor at noon Feb. 27th.

  9. McMurry (1-0) Last Week: 8 - The War Hawks are in a position similar to ETBU. The team they will play has not played a game yet this spring. The difference? McMurry’s next game is against its crosstown rival. NEXT: vs Hardin-Simmons at 1 p.m. Feb. 27th.

  10. Sul Ross State (0-1) Last Week: 9 - The Lobos also had a scheduled bye week last week so adjusting to this week’s postponement will cause minor adjustments. SRSU’s next opponent will be a tough road game. NEXT: at Texas Lutheran at 1 p.m. Feb. 27th.
