Abernathy had knocked off Childress in back to back years in the area playoffs, but Childress had other ideas in 2020. Behind a super effort from senior WR Devron Sims, the Bobcats knocked off Abernathy on a cold night at brand new Tyer Stadium. Sims had eight receptions for 119 yards and hauled in the game winning touchdown pass from QB Collin Bishop with 9:02 left to cap a 14-point second half rally. Sims then picked off a pass with 4:10 remaining in the game as the Antelopes were looking to tie the game up.

The first half was a back and forth affair with Abernathy QB Jess Hoel scoring from a yard out to put Abernathy up 7-0. Back to back scoring passes from Bishop to Lamont Nickleberry staked Childress to a 14-7 lead with 7:30 left in the second quarter.

Abernathy would seize control of the game in the later part of the second quarter as Hoel and Luke Houston connected for two touchdown passes; the second scoring pass of 27-yards came with 31 seconds left in the second quarter to put the Antelopes up 21-14 at the half.

Childress would tie the game up with 5:07 left in the third as Bishop scored from a yard out on a quarterback sneak to make it 21-21.

After stopping Abernathy on fourth-and-three at the Childress 42, the Bobcats would embark on their 58-yard game winning drive, which was finished off with Bishop’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Sims, who tight-roped the sideline to get into the end zone and eventually would send the Bobcats on to the area playoffs.
