Baylor cornerbacks coach Brian Stewart is leaving to become the new defensive coordinator at Maryland, according to a report from The Athletic

Stewart's defensive back unit ranked among the best position groups on the team in his first season. The Bears finished No. 2 in the Big 12 at 203 passing yards per game, 12 interceptions and allowed the second-fewest plays of 20+ yards.

Cornerback Raleigh Texada earned All-Big 12 First Team and All-Texas College nods after the season. Injuries and contact tracing meant that the other position was often a revolving door, but Stewart still got the best out of them.

Stewart is tasked with fixing a defense that has given up more than 430 yards per game over the past two seasons. Former Maryland defensive coordinator Jon Hoke left the program to become defensive backs coach for the Atlanta Falcons.

Mike Locksley has led Maryland to a 5-12 record in his first two seasons on campus.

Prior to Baylor, Stewart served as defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, at Rice and at Maryland under former coach Randy Edsall.
