Rice offensive coordinator Jerry Mack will leave the Owls and join Josh Heupel's staff at Tennessee, according to a report from Yahoo. Mack is expected to serve as running backs coach.

Mack coached quarterbacks and served as associate head coach after joining Mike Bloomgren's initial staff in West University. The Owls are in the midst of building a run-centric offense in the vein of David Shaw's Stanford.

Injuries and the pandemic unfortunately kept the Owls' offense underwater during the 2020 season. The Owls only played five games, but scored a combined 64 points in the first two games with starting rusher Juma Otaviano in the lineup.

Prior to Rice, Mack was the head coach at North Carolina Central. The Eagles earned shares of three consecutive MEAC championships under Mack's watch.

Mack was one of just three Black coordinators at the FBS level in Texas, and the only offensive playcaller. The others were both in the city of Houston as well: Rice defensive coordinator Brian Smith and Houston co-offensive coordinator Brandon Jones.
