Texas Tech quarterback Alan Bowman will enter the transfer portal after graduating in May. Bowman will have three years of eligibility remaining at his next stop.

Bowman starred as a true freshman under head coach Kliff Kingsbury, throwing for 2,638 yards, 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 69.4 percent of his passes in just eight games. However, Bowman suffered a collapsed lung and was forced to miss much of the season.

After Kingsbury left for the NFL, Bowman struggled to find his footing. He suffered another season-ending injury in 2019 before splitting time with grad transfer Henry Colombi in 2020. He finishes his career with 5,254 passing yards, 33 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

Bowman set the Big 12 freshman record with 605 passing yards against Houston in 2018, breaking a record set by – who else – Patrick Mahomes. Before Texas Tech, Bowman was a four-year varsity player at Grapevine High School. He threw for 11,393 yards and 119 touchdowns in a standout career.

With Bowman gone, Texas Tech has four scholarship quarterbacks on the roster. Colombi returns for another season and will compete for the starting job with three freshmen: Maverick McIvor, Donovan Smith and blue-chip recruit Behren Morton.

The Red Raiders parted ways with offensive coordinator David Yost after two years with the program largely because of his struggles getting the most out of quarterbacks. Texas Tech hired TCU offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie to the same role.
