UTEP football has named former Michigan State assistant Dave Warner as its new offensive coordinator.

Warner coached at Michigan State for 13 years, serving as either offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach for all of them. He helped develop Brian Hoyer, Kirk Cousins and Connor Cook into NFL quarterbacks and was OC as Michigan State posted three consecutive top-six finishes between 2013 and 2015.

However, Warner was moved from offensive coordinator back to QBs coach after the Spartans finished No. 116 in total offense in 2018. He left the staff when Mark Dantonio retired in 2019 and was unemployed during the 2020 season.

Warner will be tasked with developing up-and-coming quarterback Gavin Hardison. The Hobbs, N.M., native completed 54 percent of his passes for 203 yards per game, five touchdowns and five interceptions in his first season as a starter.

In addition, FootballScoop is reporting that UTEP is targeting former Texas A&M linebackers coach Bradley Dale Peveto to take over as defensive coordinator.

Peveto is the former head coach at Northwestern State and served as special teams coordinator and linebacker coach on LSU's 2007 national title time. However, he has not been a full-time playcaller on defense since serving as defensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee in 2004.

Warner and Peveto would replace offensive coordinator Mike Canales and defensive coordinator Mike Cox, both of whom were let go after three years with the program. Both Warner and Peveto served on Dimel's staff at Houston in 2001 and 2002. The Cougars posted a 5-18 record with both on staff.

UTEP football has accumulated a 5-27 record in three seasons under Dimel. However, the Miners finished the 2020 season at 3-5, the first multi-win season since Aaron Jones was on campus in 2016.
