Galena Park North Shore (14-0) vs Austin Westlake (12-0)

2 p.m. Saturday at Katy’s Legacy Stadium

It’s a showdown of last year’s two 6A state champions as North Shore, the back to back Division I state champions, face their biggest test of 2020 in undefeated Austin Westlake, who won the Division II title in 2019.

Both teams have been incredibly dominant all year, but there are questions about how good Westlake is as their level of competition hasn’t been on North Shore’s level, especially considering their annual measuring stick showdown with Lake Travis didn’t take place this season.

After taking down two straight undefeated teams, North Shore finished off their Region III title by ripping through Fort Bend Ridge Point, 56-14; it was their 29th straight game and 45 of their last 46 games.

NSHS rolled up 545 yards of offense, with much of that going with the ground game as seven different ball carriers tallied 383 yards. QB Dematrius Davis, an Auburn signee, ran for three touchdowns and added a 91-yard touchdown pass to Texas A&M signee Shadrach Banks.

Austin Westlake was a bit sloppy last week, especially on offense, but their defense was plenty good enough, pitching their sixth shutout of the year with an easy 34-0 win over Cibolo Steele.

RB Zane Minors ran for two touchdowns and talented junior QB Cade Klubnik threw for 306 yards and a touchdown and added a score on the ground to lead Westlake, who tallied 608 yards of offense on the afternoon.

Three turnovers in the first half and a missed field goal kept things close longer than it should have been, but Todd Dodge’s squad cleaned things up in a dominant second half.

Austin Westlake has the defense to keep them in this one as they have the personnel to keep North Shore contained, but this North Shore team playing in Houston and with a leader like Davis is going to be real difficult to take down.

Stepp’s Pick: Galena Park North Shore by 10
