Oregon State only signed prospects in the Early Signing Period, concentrating on prospects who will make a high impact in their program.

One of those eight athletes was Arlington Bowie WR Jimmy Valsin (6'3, 180).

The future Beaver compiled over 20 offers, and heading into the final stretch of his recruitment, schools like Illinois, Utah and Washington State were pushing hard to flip him.

Despite the push, Valsin told DCTF this past weekend that he was content with his decision.

“I’m locked in at this point. I’m good with my decision,” Valsin stated.

The Arlington, Texas native highlighted that he enjoys Corvallis and has an appreciation for the campus atmosphere that the Beavers call home.

“When I went out there to Corvallis and saw the campus, I really enjoyed it and liked it. The vibe out there is just really different than it is here,” he said.

One other thing that impressed the Bowie product was how hard Oregon State recruited him in contrast to the other program. That effort from the OSU staff has paid dividends and was one of the reasons why Valsin decided to commit in October.

According to a source close to Valsin’s recruitment, Oregon State could separate itself from other contending schools because of the current makeup of the roster in Corvallis. Valsin feels like he will be able to make an impact early in his career and potentially be “the guy” there.

Current Beaver and former Duncanville standout Zeriah Beason made a splash in his first year on campus after signing with OSU this time last year. Beason has played in all six games this season. Valsin has a relationship with Beason that connects back to their DFW roots. Beason has shown that playing early is achievable.

So, what is Oregon State getting with the signing of Arlington Bowie’s Jimmy Valsin? The Beavers are getting a two-sport athlete that shows top-end raw athleticism.  While Valsin shines on the football field, he also competes in the 100-meter and 200-meter and relays for his high school track program.

He has top-tier speed and an ability to use his size to high point the ball downfield. Valsin has also shown that he can wiggle free in the open field to make highlight plays with his legs.

A shoulder injury ended Valsin’s senior season prematurely.

“My doctor told me that it takes four to six months for it to heal. I wanted to get my surgery done early so that I don’t have to redshirt in college,” Valsin said.

Arlington Bowie has carried on despite Valsin’s injury and is set for a 6A Division II area championship game versus Prosper this weekend.

“It feels really good to see my teammates do good and put on for Arlington,” Valsin said.
