Texas State sophomore cornerback Khambrail Winters, 20, was shot and killed Tuesday night in San Marcos.
The City of San Marcos announced on Wednesday early afternoon that two people had been charged with capital murder in connection to the killing after police responded to reports of multiple gunshots at The Lodge Apartments at around 9:13 p.m. on Tuesday night. When officers arrived, Winters was found shot in the chest and was later pronounced dead.
"Our Texas State University football team is deeply saddened by the death of our team member, and friend, Khambrail Winters,” Texas State head coach Jake Spavital said in a statement. “I met with players this morning to share the news about Khambrail. We will stand together as a team and support one another during this very difficult time. Our thoughts and condolences are with Khambrail's family and loved ones.
Winters was a Sun Belt All-Conference honorable mention as a freshman in 2019 and missed the 2020 season while recovering from a torn ACL suffered during fall camp.
The sophomore was a graduate of Alief Taylor.
"The Alief Taylor Football program is deeply saddened by the passing of our former DB and Texas State DB Khambrail Winters," the school said in a statement Wednesday. "We will remember his extraordinary athletic abilities, but most importantly we will remember his kind heart and easygoing personality. A true Alief Legend. RIP"
Former Alief Taylor and current Katy Mayde Creek head coach Brian Randle also posted on Twitter about the former Lion.
Current Texas receiver Brennan Eagles was a former teammate of Winters at Alief Taylor.
