San Antonio shakeup

This one’s from Thursday night, but certainly still warrants a mention.

Texas better watch out. There seems to be a new top team this season in the San Antonio area.

San Antonio Johnson moved to 4-0 and nabbed perhaps its most impressive win of the season Thursday night over 6A No. 17 San Antonio Brandeis, 19-7. The Jags have beaten O'Connor and Brandeis this season. Head coach Mark Soto’s first season back in San Antonio has the Jaguars, so far, looking like a dark horse team to watch and could have them pushing their way into the Top 25 very soon. Johnson’s senior leader and Air Force commit, Ty Reasoner, led the way with 148 yards through the air and 78 yards on the ground.

Johnson’s defense this season has only allowed over seven points just one, in their opener against San Antonio O’Connor. The Jaguars had three turnovers vs the Broncos, a fumble and two interceptions.

Lampasas impresses while La Vega is upset

It looked like we were in for a big shakeup in 4A DI midway through Lampasas and Austin LBJ when the Jaguars held a slim edge at halftime, 18-17. But the Badgers kicked into gear on both sides of the ball eventually winning, 36-18.

But if people thought Ace Whitehead was a one-man show for the second-ranked team in 4A DI, they got a different story Friday night. LBJ has perhaps the best athletes the Badgers have seen so far this season in cornerbacks Latrell McCutchin and Andrew Mukuba and it showed on the outside. Whitehead finished with less than 20 passing attempts and Lampasas ran the ball 52 times, 30 with Jack Jerome who finished with 117 yards.

A little up the road, we got the upset we were teased.

Midlothian Heritage knocked off the third-ranked Pirates, 31-21. Despite only having 65 yards in the first half, Daelin Rader and the Jaguars used two big touchdown passes of 54 and 64 yards to push past La Vega, a team whose offense is known to get into some ruts occasionally.

The loss drops the Pirates into a tie for second place with 5-4 Stephenville with Midlothian Heritage pushing into the first-place slot at 3-0 in district.

Coastal Bend showdown

One of the biggest showdowns of the year in the Coastal Bend went Port Lavaca Calhoun’s way Friday night in a massive shootout.

The 4A DI No. 4 Sandcrabs held off Corpus Christi Miller 77-76, despite Andrew Body’s 278 yards through the air. The Bucs’ quarterback passed 11,000 passing yards over his career and moved past current UCLA QB Chase Griffin to 11th all-time in Texas high school football history.

But it was Calhoun’s vaunted rushing attack that did Miller in with 670 yards on the ground. Per the Corpus Christi Caller-Times the game was the sixth highest-scoring 11-man game in Texas high school football history. Jarius Stewart led the way with 245 yards on the ground on just 19 carries.
