Class 6A

Stock Up

Cypress Park: After winning just three games in their first two years as a varsity program, Greg Rogers’ squad is poised for a full breakout in 2020 as the Tigers improved to 3-1 with a 55-32 win over Cypress Lakes to move to 2-0 in District 16-6A play. This is no longer the cellar dwelling Cy Park squad; this is a bona-fide playoff team.

Stock Down

Midland Lee: For the second straight year Midland Lee went into their showdown with Odessa Permian unbeaten and state ranked and for the second straight year the Rebels came up short, this time in a 55-44 loss. Midland Lee’s offense has no issues, the Rebels can score points with anyone, but that defense continues to struggle in key moments and could be what keeps them from repeating last year’s post-season success.

5A Division I

Stock Up

Longview: After appearing on the Stock Report three weeks ago after a disappointing season opening loss to Temple, the Lobos have righted the ship with three straight impressive wins. Thursday night, Longview closed out the non-district slate with an emphatic 51-28 win over Beaumont West Brook to send themselves into 7-5A Division I play on a high note.

Stock Down

Lufkin: The Panthers are 1-3 and 0-2 in district and are just flat out struggling. Last week they jumped out to a 17-7 halftime lead but saw Magnolia rally back and stun the Panthers with a second straight district loss at Martin Stadium. Lufkin still has tough games on the schedule with New Caney and College Station. The unthinkable is a possibility: Lufkin could miss the playoffs in 2020.

5A Division II

Stock Up

El Paso Irvin: Joe Urias’ squad graduated 17 starters from a team that made the playoffs a year ago. After COVID-19 issues forced the cancellation of the Rockets’ first two games, you would have thought they’d come out sloppy in their opener against El Paso Hanks on Friday. Instead, Irvin’s offense was firing on all cylinders and the Rockets earned an impressive 56-42 road win at Hanks.

Stock Down

Corsicana: The Tigers are scuffling in Year 2 under Hal Wasson as Corsicana fell to 1-3 on Friday with a 41-28 loss to Royse City. The Tigers margin for error to earn a playoff spot is fading quickly as they still have games against powerful Ennis and North Forney ahead of them. Their matchup in two weeks with Greenville could be for a playoff spot in 8-5A Division II.

4A Division I

Stock Up

Alice: After getting off to a slow start due to delays caused by COVID-19 and playing two incredibly tough opponents to start the year, many were wondering if the Coyotes had enough to get into the playoffs. Alice proved the doubters wrong Friday night, taking a big step towards a post-season spot with a 28-14 win over Beeville Jones.

Stock Down

Henderson: The Lions fell to 2-4 and 1-2 in district play Friday night falling to Palestine, 17-8. They have to find a way to get their offense going as they’ve scored just 15 points the last two weeks. With tough games against Kilgore and Tyler Chapel Hill still on the horizon, another loss could put Henderson’s playoff hopes in major peril.

4A Division II

Stock Up

Sealy: Shane Mobley’s squad took a major step towards the 12-4A Division II crown by upsetting Austin County rival and state ranked Bellville, 31-28. Sealy had some issues with injuries early in the year, but they’ve won four of their last five games and look to be trending up in a big way.

Stock Down

China Spring: In the first major test in sometime for unbeaten China Spring, the Cougars defense simply couldn’t get Salado’s tough Slot-T offense off the field in a 28-14 loss on Friday night. China Spring has run up an impressive 6-1 record, but the Cougars probably aren’t in that elite category of teams. Instead the ceiling looks to be third round in Region III.

3A Division I

Stock Up

Tatum: The Eagles had to deal with missing two weeks of non-district play due to COVID-19 issues and then had to play Gladewater right off the bat. But, since then, Tatum has been flying high with back to back 24-point wins over New Boston and Atlanta to move to 3-1 on the season and 2-1 in district play. The Eagles look to be in solid position to secure a playoff spot with another win or two.

Stock Down

Yoakum: The state-ranked Bulldogs dropped their first game of the season Friday night as Columbus drummed Yoakum, 35-14. The loss for Yoakum is damaging in multiple ways because the Bulldogs not only are up against it when it comes to winning the 12-3A Division I title, but finishing in second place means the playoff path in a brutal Region III gets just a bit tougher.

3A Division II

Stock Up

Eastland: The Mavericks have been on a tear of late as they’ve righted the ship with four straight impressive wins, and this week’s win over previously unbeaten Comanche was the best yet. The Mavericks high-powered offense was potent enough against one of the state’s top defensive units in a 31-17 win. But even more encouraging has been the Mavericks defense the last two weeks, which has started to come up with timely big plays. If that unit keeps progressing, Eastland is a contender in Region II.

Stock Down

Lexington: After a sizzling start to the season, Lexington’s fallen on hard times losing two of their first three games to open up district play. Last week, the Eagles were stunned by Rogers in a 33-27 loss. Lexington isn’t going to miss out on the playoffs, but they still have another tough game with Buffalo upcoming, so it is possible LHS falls all the way to fourth place in district.

2A Division I

Stock Up

Normangee: The Panthers hot streak continues as they broke into the state rankings with an emphatic 64-22 rout of Grapeland Friday night to improve to 7-0. Normangee closes district play with winless Alto and then a tough Centerville squad, but a district title is definitely in reach at this point.

Stock Down

San Augustine: The Wolves are riding the struggle bus as they’ve dropped two straight district games and they may have hit rock bottom last week in a 56-14 blowout loss to Timpson. The Wolves still have a pair of tough district games on the horizon so they’ll need to regroup quickly to be in the post-season mix.

2A Division II

Stock Up

Burkeville: The Mustangs have been winless in three of the past four seasons, but head coach Eric Williams has gotten Burkeville turned around with a 3-3 record and two straight wins in district play. Barring some odd things happening down the stretch Burkeville should be in line for their first playoff appearance since 2011.

Stock Down

Wink: The Wildcats fell from the state rankings with a loss to arch-rival McCamey 38-33 on Friday night, the loss puts Wink on the outside looking in for the district title and also potentially makes the Wink playoff path much tougher.
