Who runs this state? The Dave Campbell's Texas Football staff gives their power rankings of the 12 FBS college football teams in Texas. In this subscriber-only piece, we'll give you detailed insight into our rankings.

This week, there's some shuffling at the top and the bottom after much of the state had bye weeks or postponed conference games.

Note: Teams are measured against the overall strength of their conference. Only teams that have played are ranked.

1. SMU Mustangs (-)

Record: 5-0
Previous: 37-34 win over Tulane
Next: vs. Cincinnati

The Mustangs didn’t look quite as unbeatable against Tulane, but SMU is still overwhelmingly the best team left in this state. A win over Cincinnati would officially make SMU the conference frontrunners – if not more.

2. Texas A&M Aggies (+1)

Record: 3-1
Previous: 28-14 win over Mississippi State
Next: Bye

The Aggies didn’t look perfect against Mississippi State, but were dominant enough that the game was never close. With all the losses around the SEC, suddenly the Aggies look like one of the conference’s best teams.

3. Houston Cougars (-1)

Record: 1-1
Previous: 43-26 loss to BYU
Next: at Navy

The Cougars couldn’t quite finish out a win against ranked BYU, but the potential was obvious. If not for a few defensive lapses down the stretch, the Cougars could have been an AP Top 25 team. As Houston plays more games, things should get better.

4. UTSA Roadrunners (-)

Record: 3-3
Previous: 28-16 loss to Army
Next: vs. Louisiana Tech

The Roadrunners continue to have the worst quarterback luck in America as Lowell Narcisse went down with a bad lower body injury. The offense didn’t look quite as crisp as earlier weeks, but nothing in this game was particularly a long term concern.

5. TCU Horned Frogs (-)

Record: 1-1
Previous: Bye
Next: vs. Oklahoma

The Horned Frogs had a week off and hopefully used the time to get the offensive line more in sync.

6. UTEP Miners (-)

Record: 3-2
Previous: Postponed game against Southern Miss
Next: vs. Charlotte

The Miners sadly lost a winnable FBS game, but should be able to move the ball against Charlotte next week.

7. Baylor Bears (-)

Record: 1-1
Previous: Postponed game against Oklahoma State
Next: vs. Texas

The Bears couldn’t play this week and it’s unclear whether Baylor will be prepared to play next week either.

8. Texas Longhorns (-)

Record: 2-2
Previous: Bye
Next: vs. Baylor

The Longhorns had some soul-searching to do, and now it’s unclear whether a game against Baylor will happen.

9. North Texas Mean Green (+2)

Record: 2-3
Previous: 52-35 win over Middle Tennessee
Next: Bye

The Mean Green continued to shoot themselves in the foot, but UNT finally found some consistency on offense. Moving to a run-based attack should do some good, and the bye week is a perfect time to get Jason Bean reacclimated.

10. Texas Tech Red Raiders (-)

Record: 1-3
Previous: Bye
Next: vs. West Virginia

The Red Raiders were on bye and will go into next week with a new starting quarterback.

11. Texas State Bobcats (-2)

Record: 1-5
Previous: 30-20 loss to South Alabama
Next: at No. 14 BYU

Another week, another close loss. At some point, a team goes from being snakebit to just being bad. With games against BYU, Louisiana, App State, Arkansas State and a shockingly great Coastal Carolina team coming up, things aren’t getting better soon.
