Texas Tech quarterback Alan Bowman has been benched, according to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. Backup Henry Colombi will take over starting responsibilities heading forward.

When Matt Wells joined the program, Bowman was one of the seemingly surefire pieces on the roster. He ranked among the top true freshmen in America. However, he has struggled under new offensive coordinator David Yost.

Bowman threw for just 97 yards against Iowa State and led zero scoring drives. The Grapevine native is down to 5.6 yards per pass attempt in 2020 against FBS opponents, down from 8.1 yards per attempt as a freshman.

Colombi was recruited to Utah State by Wells and his staff and grad transfer to Lubbock. He entered in relief against both Iowa State and Kansas State and completed 74.1 percent of his passes for 359 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Texas Tech went on its lone scoring drive against ISU with Colombi under center.

Bowman has three years of eligibility remaining after this season, while Colombi has two. Freshmen Maverick McIvor and Donovan Smith are the only other scholarship signal-callers on the roster.
