Saint Jo (5-0) at Union Hill (4-0)

Friday, 7:30

The Road Warriors of the East, Union Hill, finally get a home game and it couldn’t be any bigger in their minds.

“This is our first true test,” explains Union Hill head coach Josh Bragdon. “We are going to treat it like a playoff week.”

Their opponents Friday couldn’t agree more.

“We graduated a lot of seniors, but returned a bunch of talent,” explains Saint Jo head coach Mark Stevens. “This is a big game to see where we stack up.”

Union Hill running back Zak Hatcher has started to blossom this season and had six touchdowns last week against Medina. He has about 500 yards on the ground in only four games after not playing the positions since eighth grade.

“(Saint Jo) plays so hard and extremely fast and disciplined,” adds Bragdon. “That’s their brand.”

Saint Jo is led by tailback Logan Brawner, who has amassed an incredible 1300 yards on the ground in just five games, and a cast of role players.

This could be a precursor of the Division 1, Region 3 title game later this season, but we’ve still got half a season ahead of us.

Coach Stevens sums up all of our thoughts these days when he adds, “Any time you can show up and play a Friday football game is good.”

PREDICTION: Union Hill 68, Saint Jo 44

Nazareth (2-3) at White Deer (4-1) – An interesting battle of two top-20 teams in Panhandle. White Deer is fresh off a wild 64-63 win over Springlake Earth. Nazareth appears battle tough after some tight games over the past four weeks, including a 20-point loss to Balmorhea last weekend. Which team will have enough in the tank this week?

Blum (2-2) at Abbott (5-0) – If you are looking for a game in the East, you’re not going to get much better than this matchup of two recent Division 1 state champions (Blum-2019, Abbott-2015). The Bobcats are rebuilding, while Abbott has been on a tear this fall.

Denton Calvary at Irving The Highlands – Due to a COVID quarantine, this game has been pushed to Monday at 7pm. High school football on a Monday? Sure! This one should be interesting as both teams will have not played or practiced in the past two weeks due to the quarantine.
