Shiner, Post top ranked 3A DII programs

If you aren’t a believer of No. 1 Shiner as a top team in 2A DI after Friday night, then I don’t know what to tell you. The Comanches suffered eight turnovers and still somehow held the third-ranked team in 3A DII, East Bernard, to just seven points in a 13-7 overtime win. They were our preseason pick to go all the way in the top 2A division primarily because of that stalwart defense that was able to completely stagnate the Brahmas. We're feeling pretty okay about that prediction so far.

No. 3 Post also picked up an impressive win over 3A DII No. 10 Abernathy, 26-7. Slayden Pittman and Ashton Jefferson proved to be too much in the battle of the Antelopes as the Bold Gold set themselves up nicely for a run toward a consecutive unbeaten regular season.

Yoakum going for it all

“You don’t win games with field goals!”
“You don’t win games with field goals!”
“You don’t win games with field goals!”

In all seriousness, I love nothing more than aggressive play-calling and that’s what Bo Robinson had for his No. 9 Bulldogs against 4A DI Needville in overtime when Yoakum went for two after matching the Blue Jays’ initial overtime score instead of kicking the PAT.

Moral of the story: go for two more often, y'all.

West Orange-Stark’s debut, wow!

The result standing on its own isn’t a big shock with 3A DII No. 5 Newton retooling a lot from its 2019 team, but the margin of victory on the other hand…

4A DII No. 3 West Orange-Stark is back, folks. And if Friday night’s 70- win over the Eagles wasn’t scary enough, check out what head coach Cornel Thompson told Jorge Ramos of the Beaumont Enterprise.

“I know the score was very lopsided. We made way too many mistakes, but other than that I am thrilled with the victory.”

Way too many mistakes?! Keep in mind that this was WOS' first game of the season and to think that the Mustangs could’ve played even better in a game in which Jerren Thompson threw for 207 yards on 8-of-12 and had two other skill position players go over 100 yards individually.

Argyle taking control of 4A DI

I’ve talked a lot about 4A DI, No. 1 Argyle and No. 2 La Vega in these overviews, but their clash this weekend is worth mentioning because of the fashion in which it was done. Argyle simply look like a machine right now on both sides of the ball and after beating the Pirates, 35-7, I don’t know where or how the team stumbles. La Vega had the best resume so far this season, but I can't make an argument against Argyle anymore. The Eagles might be the most complete team right now playing in the state.

Melissa will be an interesting test next week, one the Eagles will be favored in, but perhaps their last expected test of the season before the playoffs.

Social Media Highlights

I'm going to start off with Lockhart's Desmond Pulliam, who had perhaps the best highlight of the night.

Another scary thought, that Argyle has this athlete waiting in the wings take over for C.J. Rogers in 2021.
