4A Division I

Stock Up

Athens: The Hornets have very quietly gotten off to a red-hot start to the season improving to 4-0 on Friday night by rolling past Wills Point, 62-21. Year 2 under head coach Zac Harrell and the spread offense has resulted in a much more dynamic offense as Athens is averaging 50 points per game.

Stock Down

Corpus Christi Miller: The Bucs struggled for a half last week against Sinton, but found another gear and blew the Pirates out. That gear wasn’t found this week as Miller was stunned 44-41 in a road loss to Rockport-Fulton. The Buccaneers have an offense that will score on just about anyone, but unless their defense improves this team will not live up to their potential.

4A Division II

Stock Up

Sweetwater: The Mustangs took a four-hour road trip to the San Antonio area to take on a state-ranked 4A-Division I team in Boerne and Ben McGehee’s squad didn’t blink one bit; they hit Boerne in the mouth early and hung on for huge 40-35 win over the Greyhounds. Sweetwater is a team that is trending up in a big way and is one to watch out in the Big Country.

Stock Down

Silsbee: The Tigers got a bit of a pass after their shaky effort against Jasper two weeks ago; they were down six before the game was called before halftime. They didn’t get a pass this week as the Tigers were dominated in a 46-14 loss to Texarkana Pleasant Grove. The Tigers are battling through some injuries and inconsistent play on offense at the moment. They’ve have a propensity for slow starts and peaking late, so the door is still open for this team, who has been to the state semifinals in two straight years.

3A Division I

Stock Up

Dalhart: After back to back losses, Dalhart got back on the right track in a big way Friday night as the Golden Wolves improved to 2-2 on the year with a dominant 49-21 win over a very good Friona squad. With winless Borger on the schedule next week, don’t be surprised if this Dalhart squad starts to hit their stride.

Stock Down

Fairfield: Dropping down to 3A-Division I thus far has not been kind to the Eagles, who lost their Week 2 game due to Covid-19 precautions and now are heading into district play at 0-3 after a disappointing 35-21 loss to Robinson. The Eagles are going to need to right the ship quickly or this is a team that could be in danger of missing out on the playoffs if things keep trending in the wrong direction.

3A Division II

Stock Up

Reagan County: The Owls have caught fire of late, winning three in a row after dropping their season opener to Merkel. One key to RCHS’s three-game winning streak has been their offense, which has averaged 53 points per game the last three weeks.

Stock Down

Riesel:  After a solid 2-0 start, it’s been a rough two weeks for the Indians, who were blown out by Clyde last Saturday and then this week they were drilled by 2A Bosqueville, 52-26. District play starts next week for RHS and it’s not easy out of the gate with games against Clifton and Franklin.

2A Division I

Stock Up

Crawford: The Pirates, under first-year head coach Greg Jacobs, are rolling after a 4-0 start. They broke into the 2A-Division I state rankings this week after knocking off Holland, 13-8, in a battle of unbeaten teams.

Stock Down

Cisco: No need to hit the panic button yet for Cisco as the Loboes are 2-2 on the year and both losses are to 3A-Division I programs. But Friday’s 39-20 loss to Jim Ned was much more concerning than the Wall loss and sent Cisco tumbling from the state rankings. With Comanche looming this week, its possible Cisco drops to 2-3 before non-district wraps up.

2A Division II

Stock Up

Archer City: The Wildcats made their way into the state rankings this week after a dominant 56-28 win over Henrietta to improve to 2-1. Archer City may be a real sleeper come playoff time as they appear to be capable of going toe to toe with some of the powers in 2A-Division II.

Stock Down

Mount Enterprise: Life after Kendre Miller has been tough for the Wildcats, who are off to a difficult 0-3 start after going 10-2 a year ago with the current TCU Horned Frog. Friday night may have been a bit of a low point losing to a Burkeville team that had been on a 17-game on the field losing streak.
